Rare Photos of a Newborn - July 29, 2009

This baby was just born; barely minutes old when these photos were taken.  I have had horses for thirty-four years and have seldom had the opportunity to witness the actual birth because mares usually foal at night when we are not looking.   To capture this event as it happens in daylight with a camera nearby is rare.

The photos show the mother mare licking the baby to get its circulation going which gives the baby energy to get up and drink the mother's milk.   We see baby's first attempt to stand up and mom's close attention.

The mare is Major's Ultra Lady, one of our Tennessee Walker mares that we lost in the spring of 2010.  We called her "Lady".  Her last colt was named "Narnia".
